Last week Saturday, I had the honour to attend Baked The Blog‘s first Beauty School workshop, hosted and organised by Aisha herself. We got to learn the basics of beauty and other tips and tricks of the trade, as well as debunk some beauty myths, with BTB’s resident beauty maven, Saffiyah.

It was in a beautiful location at Vida e Caffe in Woodstock – we were served delicious frios, cappuccinos and other yummy snacks; we got our nails done by FoxBox, which is basically this really cool nail bar that can come to you and do your nails, or you can visit them at Woolworths in the beauty department; we had our pictures snapped by Tegan Smith, a Q&A with Aisha and received amazing goody bags, which Aisha and her team had worked really hard on, and lemme say I’ve just been obsessed with the Inglot lip gloss and Vida eco-cup.

I really enjoyed the day because I love make up and beauty, but I’ve never been on a course before – everything I know is from Youtube (thank you, Lord, for the internet!). It was also really good to see Tegan Smith again (you may remember her as the amazing photographer who shot this post and my outfit shot below) and to finally meet Aisha! Even though we’re like besties on social media (LOL), last Saturday was actually the first time I met her! We chatted about school and blogging and it was really cool to chat in real life – she’s so silly and funny glamorous and composed!

I obviously won’t disclose all I learnt (otherwise there’d be nothing left for you guys at the next one ? ) but I’ll just share some of my most valuable tips that I learnt:

  • When you contour your face, only go a maximum of three shades darker to contour and one shade lighter to highlight. A non-shimmery bronzer with a stipling brush also works really well, and the key areas to contour are under the cheekbones, under the chin/cheek and down the sides of your nose, while you highlight your brows, cheeks, cupids bow and temples.
  • The seven essential brushes every girl needs are: a slanted brush, an eyeshadow brush, a blending brush, a stipling brush, a bullet brush, an eyeliner brush for liquids and gels and an eyebrow brush. Try and get natural fibre brushes! Which leads me to…
  • Don’t wash your brushes with baby shampoo! It’s actually not too good for the brush fibres – rather get a MAC brush cleanser and dilute it, then spray it on the bristles and let it dry. Don’t immerse in water and don’t let the brushes get wet past the base (like the metal part)!
  • An eyebrow pencil that contains wax and an eyebrow brush (or spoolie, you know, those mascara looking wands that you steal from the MAC counter) are essentials! Side note: I use the Essence dark brown pencil – no matter how dark your hair is, avoid using pure black!
  • Lip liner is your best friend – Subculture and Boldly Bare are incredible versatile colours, and when you line your lips, line around them and then colour it in. This will make your lipstick last longer!

And last but not least:

  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions at a cosmetics counter! No matter how intimidating it is or how dumb your question may feel, the ladies and gentlemen are there to help you ?

You’re going to send me a very detailed PDF via email as to how you got your braids to sit so perfectly like that. Please and thank you.
